Redefining the Artist

Fresh Abstractions…

I’ve been working on a few new directions as of late, looking for something to bridge a few gaps, and fill a few steps in…these measure just 4 inches each, mixed-media on canvas, and will be available in the coming weeks ahead…Enjoy!

A few friends…

'Bluestem #6', Original wash w/pencil, 2011

'Bluestem #7', Original wash w/pencil, 2011

Both of these pieces, and a few other surprises, will be available this Saturday in Luverne at HGS Gallery, located on Main Street, from 10-4pm. I’ll be working on some fresh watercolors, along with several other artist friends, including Chad Nelson, who will be creating a special edition mezzotint throughout the day, and then later joining me back in Madison for a special Double Header, quite the day for sure!

Reception scheduled for ‘Wounded Knee’ showing…

Direct from The Center for Western Studies:

The reception for artists in the Interpretations of Wounded Knee 1973 and 1890 art exhibition will be on Thursday, April 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. All artists in the show will be recognized. The reception kicks-off the annual Dakota Conference, which begins April 27th. The event is free and open to the public.

I’ll be there for sure, and then for the first day of the Dakota Conference as well, I’m really looking forward to the event, and glad to be a small part of this historical moment too.

Now in Paperback…

From Sioux Falls Woman Magazine

Another great piece, thanks to Thea Miller Ryan, MJ Knobe, and everyone from SFWM, its an honor for sure!

Art of the Hills revealed…

I recently had the honor of writing a small feature for the most recent edition of ‘Art of the Hills’, a great regional fine arts based magazine from Hill City, South Dakota. An annual, this edition focuses on the ‘Emerging Artist’, and portrays, questions, and otherwise throws a wrench into any preconceived notion of what that means, and who that is, just a great concept for another quality read.

And here’s the opening intro, for more, follow along to the online edition, and enjoy!

Luverne Spring Art Show…

Looks like Luverne is hosting a ‘Spring Art Show’ on April 21st from 10-4pm. HGS Gallery, Deuschle Studios, Brandenburg Gallery, Carnegie Cultural Center, Reborn, and Myhre Studio are hosting the event. My own home of HGS Gallery will have several artist demonstrations, including myself, and one of my favorites, artist Chad Nelson, will be creating a special edition print just for the event.

Postcards from the Edge…

These are a glimpse of a new series of ‘Postcard’ images, kind of fun and easy takes on traditional landscape motifs with a comic inspired twist. Completed on aquaboard with a mix of wash and pencil, these will be available this coming April at the Luverne Studio Tour at HGS Gallery, I’ll share more about that upcoming event in the next few weeks, until then, back to the studio!

New work at The South Dakota Art Museum Store…

I just delivered several new originals to The South Dakota Art Museum Store in Brookings yesterday, a mix of recent washes and a few oils remain too, a nice group of selections for sure.

This original piece from 'Vibrations' is a 4x6, mounted to a 11x14 frame, and retails for an honest $95.

‘Wounded Knee’ Exhibition up at The Center for Western Studies…

Interpretations of Wounded Knee 1973-1890 is currently being installed at The Center for Western Studies on the campus of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I humbled to be a small part of this impressive showing, it’s one of the best shows I’ve seen, and probably the best show I’ve ever been part of, just a standout collective for sure.

I’ll share more on this showing in the coming weeks, enjoy the sneak peak until then.

Swing on by HGS Gallery, open 10-4pm Wednesdays -Saturdays in downtown Luverne, Minnesota, to catch the latest from me and 30 other regional artists, quite the mix, and quite the stop, check it out!

First Friday at Zandbroz Variety…

I’ll be participating in First Friday at Zandbroz Variety, in historic downtown Sioux Falls, this coming Friday, March 2nd, from 5-8pm. Swing on by, I’ll have two fresh pieces on display, and there’s all sort of art festivities happening throughout the downtown corridor, and there’s a wine sampler tour for those interested in such things, anyhow, mark the calendar and make it a date.

Artists of the Plains is this Weekend…

I’ll be calling the Holiday Inn City Centre in Sioux Falls home this weekend, as the 32nd Annual Artists of the Plains Show & Sale kicks off yet again. It’s actually my second year, as I’ll be returning from the ashes of last year’s efforts, and I’m bringing mostly new work, a mix of oils and washes, there’s probably something worthwhile in all of that.

Anyhow, mark the date, the awards and reception is scheduled for Friday evening from 5-9pm, that’s my pick for coming out, and the show continues through Saturday and Sunday.

Program for 2012 Artists of the Plains

Arts Night at the Pavilion…

Just thought I’d share this original piece from Dakota Requiem that will be available for purchase at Arts Night 2012 at The Washington Pavilion of Arts & Sciences in Sioux Falls. The show itself runs through late February into the beginning of May, and admission to their Visual Arts Center is free, I’ll share more in the coming weeks, until then, sit back and enjoy the show…

Sketches make the mark…

I’ve been working on a few new sketches as of late, a mix of wash and prismacolor, nothing incredible, just consider it a modest proposal of possibilities for the coming year.

I’ll probably continue to develop this concept a bit more over the coming weeks, guessing that these might transform themselves into a larger format, and maybe into oil as well, looking towards this Spring.

Looking forward to ‘Interpretations on Wounded Knee’…

This original Oil was just completed over the past few weeks for ‘Interpretations of Wounded Knee’ , and after much trial and failed attempts, finally something worthwhile came of it. This piece measures 16×20 inches, on a wooden cradle, with a 2 inch lift.

A few words about the show, which are not my own…

Interpretations of Wounded Knee 1973 and 1890

On December 29, 1890, Miniconjou Lakota chief Spotted Elk (Big Foot) and some 300 of his followers were gunned down on the banks of Wounded Knee Creek. Eighty-three years later, 200 Oglala Lakota seized and occupied the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, for 71 days.

The theme for the 44th Annual Dakota Conference is “Wounded Knee 1973: Forty Years Later.” In observance of the 40th anniversary of the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973, the Dakota Conference will address questions related to Wounded Knee 1973, the 1890 massacre, as well as any and all aspects of Northern Plains Indian history and culture.

The art exhibition, “Interpretations of Wounded Knee 1973 and 1890,” will be displayed in conjunction with and during the Dakota Conference. This is a one-time art show intended to recognize the impact of these two events in Northern Plains, Indian, and American history.

Twenty-five artists will be exhibiting their work, including:

Artists Against Hunger 5 Recap…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

What a cool way to share a weekend with over 500 of you fine supporters of locally produced art, and with a little snow & ice  tossed in for good measure too, maybe next June at Artists Against Hunger 6 we can avoid that kind of weather, but keep the crowds.

If you saw anything you like, and wished it went home with you, feel free to contact me at chris@eastofegan.com, or look for me this February at Artists of the Plains in Sioux Falls.

Badlands Awakens…

These are part of a much larger series of works from ‘Badlands’, essentially my most recent take on the landscape from a trip this Fall, which has now developed into about 15 distinctive works. Each measures 6×18 inches, on a stretched canvas, and retails for a straightforward $150, and a few can be available (although a bit soft) this weekend at Artists Against Hunger, and later in Luverne and Brookings too.

A series of ‘Cosmic Events’

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These recent works, called ‘Cosmic Events’, have been in progress since last summer, and a few have been framed and readied for our collective enjoyment.

I’ve really been drawn to a darker sense of color, a bit more mood with the ochre perhaps, and that darkness seems to be a worthwhile pursuit to continue forward into next year.

Working…

Letting the feet do the talking…

…and having the art stand on its own.

Artists Against Hunger 5…

I’ll be taking part in this cool event next weekend, check this out:
For the second time in 2011 the Sioux Empire arts community is banning together to fight hunger in South Dakota. The bi-annual Artists Against Hunger is an eclectic blend of painters, potters, pin stripers, and photographers that use their artistic abilities to raise awareness, funds, and non perishable food donations for the Sioux Falls Food Bank. Every year, the Sioux Falls Food Bank is overwhelmed with families in need of personal care items, food, and support; but such a high demand doesn’t come at a low price, which is where we need your help!
Artists Against Hunger will be in the second floor commons of 8th and Railroad center the first weekend of December ( the 2nd from 5-9 and the 3rd from 10-4). Come support LOCAL artists this holiday season and join us in the fight against hunger by dropping off your non perishable food items, personal care goods, and any financial donations (for every five dollars donated we can provide thirty meals!).

Asher Srednas, Kevin Bierbaum, Lisa Shoemaker, Chris Francis, Amber Pate, Laura Smith, Lacy Lee, Tim Jewell, Scott Ehirsman, and Twisted Choppers, are among more two dozen artists that will be participating in this winter’s AAH.

Rug and Relic, Prairie Star Gallery, The Washington Pavilion, YMCA and Latitude 44 will be accepting donations for those who cannot attend the show!

Oh Luverne…

I’ve been looking forward to traveling to Luverne for their Annual Holiday Studio Crawl, which features tours of 6 studios and my downtown gallery home of HGS. I’ll be spending the day working on a few new things at HGS, and in oil at that, which I actually have never done outside of my own studio before, so let’s take it on the road, what could possibly go wrong? (Well, everything)

I’ll have a number of new works available as well as I ready for some big things this coming February, but more on that later…

Hello Aberdeen…

I found my way to Aberdeen today, which amounts to a 6 hr day trip for the love of art and the thrill of the show.

‘Dakota Requiem’ can now be found at the Wein Gallery at Presentation College for about the next 6 weeks, through mid-December.

Postcards on the way…

My friends at the Eastbank Art Gallery are hosting yet another ‘Postcard Salon’ this fall, which some of you may recall that the first salon started at the now closed Sioux Empire Arts Council Horsebarn Arts Center. I’ve actually been part of all 3 of these shows, and I’ve enjoyed seeing what others can do with 4×6 inches, it’s just a cool challenge, but I can’t make these and not think about not being at the Barn once again.

These works measure 4×6 inches on paper, watercolor w/prismacolor, and are from the quickly developing ‘Bluestem’ series. Each card can be purchased for $30, with half going to the Artist, and the other towards the Gallery, with a number of cards available from a number of artists. A reception is scheduled for Friday, November 4th, from 5:30-7:30 at Eastbank, swing by and take a few cards home!

Paint it Pink…
